From the Forest Floor: Rediscovering a Rare Species in Kalimantan

The end of 2024 brought an extraordinary discovery to the biodiversity records of Indonesia, particularly in East Kalimantan. On November 28, 2024, the elusive Spotted Kukri Snake (Oligodon annulifer) was rediscovered in the concession area of PT Narkata Rimba, East Kalimantan. This marks the first sighting of the species in Indonesia since its last record in Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park, West Kalimantan.

The Spotted Kukri Snake is known from only five locations, primarily in Malaysia and Brunei, with significant gaps between sightings (https://www.iucnredlist.org/). This latest rediscovery occurred in a tree nursery surrounded by natural meranti forest, a habitat meticulously maintained by PT Narkata Rimba. This snake is a ground-dwelling species highly dependent on healthy forests and abundant leaf litter, which provide essential shelter and foraging opportunities for its survival.

This discovery underscores the importance of sustainable forest management to preserve the delicate ecosystems that such species rely on. For PT Narkata Rimba, this milestone is both exciting and challenging. It reaffirms their commitment to conserving biodiversity while also presenting the responsibility of ensuring the biodiversity survival through long-term, sustainable programs.

Indonesia is a global biodiversity hotspot, harbouring around 17% of the world’s species, including a wealth of endemic species. However, deforestation remains a pressing issue, particularly in Kalimantan, where forest loss has averaged 0.72 million hectares annually over the past decade (Forest Watch Indonesia). This has put immense pressure on wildlife, including species like the Spotted Kukri Snake, whose survival is tied to the preservation of pristine forest ecosystems.

Nusantara Climate Initiative (NCI) is dedicated to conserving and restoring ecosystems in Indonesia through Nature-Based Solutions approach. The rediscovery of the Spotted Kukri Snake is a powerful reminder of the importance of safeguarding forest habitats. NCI’s mission includes fostering partnerships with stakeholders to develop conservation strategies that ensure the survival of such rare species.

This discovery reinforces NCI’s commitment to balancing economic development with biodiversity protection by supporting sustainable practices and raising public awareness about the significance of Indonesia’s natural heritage.
